I don't disagree with your assessment of Windows. I actually use all 3 operating systems (Mac, Windows, and Linux (Ubuntu)), and Windows is definitely not my preference. Unfortunately, when you work in a corporate environment, you're usually limited to--yep, Windows.
I've been using Leo since 2003, and I think Edward and all the contributors have done a wonderful job with it's evolution. I've tried most new versions of Leo as they've come out, but I always revert back to Leo 4.4.3.1 (circa 2007). The reason? It's rock solid, and it does what I want it to do. And it's not missing some of the features that the newer versions of Leo are lacking (drag and drop of nodes, colorization of nodes, etc.) That said, I unfortunately feel that Leo will not be accepted by the larger populace until the installation of Leo is made dead simple and foolproof. If I, a user of Leo for 7 years, have trouble installing the latest version Leo, what chance does the average Joe-user have? That's why I think an .EXE version of Leo is urgently needed, and would resolve many (if not all) of the installation issues. Finally, many corporations have policies that may prohibit the installation of Python. A "portable app" .EXE version of Leo (runnable from a USB drive) would mitigate that issue as well.
