The most flexible slideshow generating idea I've seen is Jessyink. It uses SVG slides with javascript embeded in the document to handle fancy transitions. Being vector graphics based, everything, including text, scales nicely.
Sides are created as "layers" in an Inkscape SVG document. Terry Brown talked about a way he had of creating invidual slides through Inkscape from a Leo document, something allied to this concept.
