I see your point, but I do find persistently open outlines useful. I have several (non-code) outlines where having to dig down to the last open tree on each open would be annoying, and cloning a marker to the rout would also be clunky. It would certainly be possible for the expansion information to live somewhere else, although I think it would be a fairly major change to the code base. It might be something that would make sense as part of some broader split between outline data and outline metadata. Of course, my desire to see the same part of the outline open on each load might be covered by an externally recorded "last active position" - I'm wondering if that's already external.
