Tried every possible combination of \\ and //, /  and \ with and
without file: and either nothing happens or I still get 'file does not
exist'.

I will file a bug report. Thanks for the suggestions, though.

One other question. Why does the target need to be specified in the
headline unlike for URLs. For example, I might have a headline of
{@url Friendly Name} with body text that starts with the full URL
http://somewebsite.com in the first line.
