Suppose we give the user the option of outlining the presently-selected pane with an outline akin to the outlines shown by free_layout when the user invokes the Easter egg. The outlines don't have to be so bold, but imo a clearer indication of the pane with focus would be helpful. I'll take a look at the code to see how to make this happen...
