After studying the code in more detail, I think it is pretty good as it is. The Easter-egg interface might be improved, but it's not very important because changes to the layout persist. That's the important thing because it means most people won't fiddle much with layout once they have something they like. If I were to suggest a change to the Easter-egg interface, I would suggest making it work like blender's Easter-egg interface: After you control-click the splitter, you choose the window by clicking on it, iirc. This is a bit calmer than being presented with a bit menu. But to repeat: improving this is very small beer. The main thing is to allow different types of panes. I'd start by adding the rendered pane to the list of new panes to be added. However, we still have to resolve the "important nits" of how many rendering panes to allow, and how to manage them (from the user's point of view) if multiple panes are allowed, as they are at present...
