Hmm, I guess that's not the case, I was off by one, the unl fragment
has the '#' at the start of it, so calling urlparse on it is ok, but it
still makes no sense to me why the original code (which of course was
working for me) wouldn't work.

A mystery, but perhaps not a very important one.
