Personally, as a programmer, I only use emacs for very specialized things (LISP and haskell development, org-mode, easyGPG). The only reason I chose emacs for haskell and LISP was because of interactive tools (much like the iPython plugin) that allow me to push code between the editor and the interpreter, making for more rapid development. Otherwise I'm using vim or an IDE more suited for whatever language I'm using.
