I'll have a look, not convinced that the soft crash is relevant, but if
+/- todo.py is enough to toggle the crash it must be doing something,
perhaps a change in the way window parents are specified in qt.

Unfortunately the Win 7 machine I just sat down out to test turns out
to have been upgraded to XP :-)
