Thanks for this.  It actually does work if you strip off the leading @url:
g.handleUrl should strip off @url automatically if present.

You have also exposed two items from the Department of Redundancy Department:

1. There is no longer any need for g.handleUrlInUrlNode.
2. There is duplicate code in g.handleUrl dealing with expanduser.

I'll attend to all of this today.
