Correct. This is by design, although it's confusing for newbies. That is, the only way to change the find/change areas are with the minibuffer change commands. You could call this a doc bug. > 2. At present, losing focus is equivalent to the keyboard-quit command. I don't remember exactly why, but all such focus issues are both tricky and debatable. Imo, the solution to not remembering a command is autocompletion, however, not some fancy remembering of the minibuffer. HTH.
