Imo, such switches are often preferable to separate bzr branches, for 
several reasons:

1. The "if switch:" statements clearly show the differences between the old 
and new code.  Very handy.

2. Setting switch = False is an easy way for me to compare the old and new 
code. Running the unit tests with both values of the switch ensure 
consistency.

3. The switch provides an easy way for *users* to back out of code, should 
it become necessary.  This allows me to publish the new code sooner, 
without users having to pull down a new branch.
