Just tweaked Ludwig Schwardt's superb install instructions for using HomeBrew: http://leoeditor.com/installing.html#installing-leo-on-macos-10-7-lion-and-later by updated links and adding a note about XCode.
Once I got XCode installed correctly, everything went as smoothly as with apt-get on Linux. This is a *huge* improvement over previous MacOS installs.
