    thanks for that explanation - I was similarly wondering about disabling 
directive headlines recently.

I've been using '#' to do this but

a) wasn't sure if this was the 'approved' way
b) wasn't sure if there were exceptions that would stop this working.

I too couldn't find anything in the docs - Edward, I suggest that a form of 
Terry's reply is put in the docs somewhere.

Is there a good reason for @bookmarks working differently, ie could/should 
it be consistent with the rest? (I've not knowingly used bookmarks.py...)
