Indeed, I haven't really considered substantial alternatives to the
diff-based @shadow algorithm before your post.

There may be fatal flaws in *parts* of your thoughts, but so what?  The
trick is to find the ideas that might work.

Imo, we are thinking in the same direction: we want not-complete-perfect
heuristics that will usually make @shadow more useful.
