After the fast-import, I noticed that there was a tremendous object file (~1.2Gb), and I knew that there was no way I was going to get that pushed before I went to sleep, so I looked into shrinking/compressing history in git repos, and stumbled upon those magic repack and garbage collect commands. AFAIK, the only downside is that reverting to older commits will be marginally slower.
