Currently that's not possible in general, although you can do it with
the graphcanvas plugin.  With that plugin installed, you can add the
node to a graph and then set its foreground / background color, and
these apply to the tree view as well as the graph view, the graph
doesn't need to be visible for this to work.

But that's only a work around, there's no general method at this point.
