Thanks Jake. The "Save Layout" does hold the pane position between sessions and I can save different window positions to load using it. But as you said, there does not appear to be a an easy and intuitive way to do what I want it to do, including the splitting the body pane the way I want. I spent a long time looking before I asked. :-)
