I am going to close this. The issues involved either seem too minor to care about, or they actually work as things stand. In particular, 1. Leo is available for a normal user, call him Bruce, after a routine install. 2. Requiring a Python installation that is available to all users seems reasonable. Furthermore, Python installations may have made this issue moot: a lot has changed since Python 2.4... Please reopen this bug only if *you* are willing to do something about it.
