Regular @auto trees suffer the following disadvantages compared to @clean:

- @auto is much slower than @clean.
- @auto does not allow you to specify your preferred node organization.
- @auto preserves neither clone links nor uAs as well as @clean,
  even when using @persistence nodes.

In short, using plain @auto is all pain and no gain. I can't recommend it.

Kent, have you tried @clean?  I am using it regularly myself in my
xslt/jQuery work.  It's just terrific.
