The g.no_cache switch enables (and marks) the new code.  At present it is 
*False*.  All tests pass regardless of this switch.

*This is preliminary code*.  Please don't pull it unless you are feeling 
adventurous.

Tomorrow I'll be testing with this switch True.  Part of the testing will 
be to remove all the code disabled when the switch is True.

*Note*: a call to ni.compute_last_index in openLeoFile in the bridge 
apparently suffices as an alternate fix to bug #130.  I can't get the 
master/slave tests to fail.

As usual, there may be short-term problems with the new code. That can't be 
helped. Simpler code is the only way to be rid of gnx problems.

*paste-retaining-clones*: I shall retain this command for the moment.  It 
should not be affected by today's changes, but I haven't tested it, unless 
the unit tests do...

Please report any problems immediately.
