I think the easter egg pane management is a level of UI customization that I haven't seen as a regular GUI toolkit feature. Blender has it, but it has its own custom GUI rendering. The tiling window managers like i3 do basically the same thing, but again, in a custom kind of way. Slightly less flexible, and they seem to have this "not part of the docking system" central area, but they have more visual indicators (at the cost of some screen space), and drag and drop simplicity.
