The diff: https://github.com/leo-editor/leo-editor/commit/a794384 hard to see how, I was aware of that and had it in the back of my mind, but it looks sensible. Unless gs.es_exception() raises exceptions again, and previously the code touched above was wrapped in a try/except higher up the call chain.
