I think the "unified" view is unlikely to go anywhere at present. There are no open enhancement proposals on this topic. Imo, adding p.drawer to each node will give the user to add text metadata to any node. The choice will be entirely up to the user, and will be independent of whether outline and body pane(s) are unified.
