I'm glad ~ is working for you. Here are some further thoughts:
Paths are relative to the .leo file in which they reside, so except for the
home directory, one would expect that the directory structure "in the
neighborhood" of the .leo file would be the same.
Note that within paths, Leo will evaluate {{expression}} in the context of
the current commander (c)
<http://leoeditor.com/directives.html#path-expressions>. For example:
@file {{c.config.getString('jkn-dir')}}/myFile.py
