I intent to proceed carefully and not push anything that could jeopardize others. I see some wording in the Github page on removing sensitive data <https://help.github.com/articles/removing-files-from-a-repository-s-history/>that some history editing actions can change commit id's and have follow on effects with Issue links, bookmarks, etc. etc.
