Further experimenting I see that after a .leo file save, I invoke 'Refresh from disk' on the @file node in question and the Recovered Nodes section shows the discrepancies. Also, I found that the behavior is inconsistent. Replaced text in the top level node does trigger an @file save, whereas other nodes did not.
