The free_layout / NestedSplitter machinery (which I'd like to replace with the QDock layout scheme) should be able to host any Qt Widget. But it doesn't *provide* *any*, graphics pane or anything else. The graphcanvas.py plugin uses a QGraphicsScene, and co-exists fine with the free_layout / NestedSplitter machinery.
