To answer my own question, the answer is yes, as discussed further in answer to in my reply to Cormac <https://groups.google.com/d/msg/leo-editor/MQR-jxUsJYg/TWaTgCOPBQAJ>. Imo, we must follow the Jupyter model, in which the server runs on the user's own (possibly virtual?) machine. It's time to study how Jupyter handles security issues.
