I used Matt's Debian installation without Anaconda and everything ran as 
smoothly as silk. 

My heart-felt thanks to both of you for all the help. I doubt that I would 
ever have installed in on my own.

Now all I have is the amazingly simple task of learning how to use it.  I 
shall return!
