Length can be unavoidable, when there are many interacting parts.  But each 
of those parts is better when compact.  But there's an art here - too terse 
can be be hard for others to grasp.

A need for a lengthy essay could indicate that the underlying thoughts have 
not gelled enough for prime time.  Or it could mean that the thoughts are 
very rich and well worked-out.  But for our purposes here, it will be 
helpful if they are put simply and clearly.
