I'm finally getting around to this.

The wikipedia has a description of the US-International keyboard
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QWERTY#US-International>. Note the keys in
red. If I read the description correctly, the red keys are dead keys
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_key>.

Is this the keyboard you are describing?
