Turns out that *edit-pane-test-open* is almost there. I have to make about three configuration changes using the configuration menu - for each pane I open - then it's about what I had in mind. That's too cumbersome for routine use, but perhaps with some quality time studying the code ...
BTW, do we know if anyone actually uses this edit-pane thing? It's got all those good-sounding options, like *editpane/markdownview.py*, but VR3 does most of them and with better rendering (IMHO) and more functionality. It looks experimental, like it was used to learn how to do what the author actually wanted to do. So maybe it's no longer useful to anyone else.
