I just spun up a fresh Debian VM. I installed Leo from pypi with pip, and
got Leo 6.5.2. It installed and ran with no apparent problems. I didn't
install from 6.6 from git so that I could see if all the dependencies got
installed right from pypi and that no workarounds were needed. Since that
was the case, I didn't think that Leo 6 would have problems. I assume that
once 6.6 is on Pypi then it will install with pip and run also.

This is with Debian V11 (Bullseye), Cinnamon 4.8.6 (the desktop).
