I doubt that Rust will affect Leo, but I might eventually change my mind. 
For sure, Leo's desktop version, written in Python, will remain the 
reference standard.


I'd look into Julia <https://julialang.org/>. It's compiled and fast, and 
with its dynamic typing will probably seem like a comfortable fit to 
Python. From the home page:

"you can easily use libraries from Python, R, C/Fortran, and C++, and Java."
