I think “submodels” and “selection sets” are a good
characterisation of the different usages of groups.

I think the main point in the concept of submodels is to be
able to edit or view a part as if it were a model while still
being a part of a whole, be they stand-apart models used in a
greater scene (maybe in separate files) or parts separated to
better explain or view the construction steps.

I’d also like the posibility to repeat submodels in the main
model: allways exactly identical parts that I’d want to see
all changed when I change one copy (or the master copy).

> Would you use groups if you had sub-models?

Yes, mainly as “selection sets”, to easily select stand-
together pieces (doors and the like) and to name parts (“right
leg”...) that don’t need separate attention in the building
steps or whose construction can’t be separated from the main
building (needing support or reference for position).

> Do you need groups to be nested?

Yes, certainly. Hierarchical submodels would be a plus too.

> Would it be better to save selection sets instead?

Apart for changing the name for the better, what would be the
differences with groups as they exist now?
