The issue is not restricted to mirroring, it's just a special case of
scaling.
While I think that these practices shouldn't be promoted (among others,
for the reasons you list), it's somewhat annoying that they are not
supported at LDraw import. For example LSynth synthetises cables by
placing side by side scaled straight cable elements. This method is far
from perfect but it's the most "portable"... if only scaling was
supported in LeoCAD ;)
