Yes, the build file system is mounted over NFS... the clocks are now in sync <looks 
sheepish> :-) The build is working fine now.

        Could you be working across NFS (or some other file sharing system)
        with the clocks of the two systems unsynchronised ?

        If they are out of sync for 5 minutes, then starting make 6 minutes
        after configure should do the trick. Or you could synchronise
        clocks of course.
