Alas, finding out what's wrong with Emacs/LessTif is part of our
problem, because no one of us is a Motif/LessTif expert.

My personal guess is that Emacs' specific way of doing X plays a major
role.  Emacs doesn't contain an Xt event loop; instead it waits for
traffic on the socket underlying the X connection, and does event
handling during a SIGIO (which I think means that something using Xt
timeouts generally has problems.)
