Ask "man cc".
If I would knew the answer I wouldn't hesitate to tell you :-)

I think you should add this flag when running configure, e.g.
configure --prefix=myhomedir --enable-static
and see what happens.
If there are problems they will hopefully soon be addressed,
when we switch to the new libtool version.
