Well, that is not a "once for all" fix.
configure is just generated by autoconf, so we need to look either
at our input (configure.in) or look for bugs in autoconf (and friends).
The line you quote is not a literal part of configure.in, but created
by autoconf.

Which was the value of that variable?

The  "latest development version" is probably either 0.92.29 or .31,
both tarballs have been built using autoconf 2.50 IIRC ...
