OT: debugging configure stuff

Sorry for abusing this list for an OT, but it's actually LessTif related...
Working on configure macros I messed up something. I get 

  /usr/bin/m4: ERROR: EOF in string
when running autoconf and autoheader, but I'm unable to locate
the problem. Isn't there any facility around to help  debugging
those files?
