There may be graphical front ends to gcc, don't know - I don't use them. This also should come later, if one knows what's happening at the lower level it's easier to address problems later on. (there's at least another free compiler, and perhaps commercial ones. Unlike M$ or IBM compiler suites all un*x compilers ship by default in their command line incarnation). For a more thorough introduction in development on linux you'll have to refer to the Linux websites and newsgroups.
