That's an interesting issue, but I can't help immediately.

Can you post a couple of lines (of configure output)
around that warning/error message?

flex should IMHO be an optional tool, and my understanding
was that if it is not installed then the fallback version
(namely the output produced by flex upon building the source
package) would be used.
