Well, I had this debate with the Speakeasy people -- their first argument was that mailing list software should not respond to a user AT ALL if they're not subscribed. I argued that it's perfectly reasonable that mailing list software respond to incoming messages (spoofed or not) to say "You are not authorized to post to this list". Ultimately, they agreed, but made the point that, at least, it should NOT echo the incoming message -- simply respond with an automated reply, but don't propagate the spam content. While such a reply could still find its way to a spam trap address -- which could result in being RBL'd -- at least I'd have the legitimate defense of saying "I don't think a 'You are not allowed to post to this list' response really qualifies me as a spammer." It would be harder to defend myself if the content were more nefarious than that. (I may have been lucky enough to hit a Speakeasy spam trap, rather than an RBL honeypot directly). And since I've already been called about it once, this isn't a simply theoretical problem at this point -- you can bet that, if the spammers have learned to use this trick, they'll continue to use it... spud.
