Possibly dead XML code. Is there really any case when this directory is not named "i386-pc"? Isn't Grub i386-specific?

Also, my friend who has amd64 (pure 64-bit system) says that he is forced to use LILO. Is he right?

Not any more Grub has been fixed for the amd, the x86_64 stuff is just starting to go in, everything right now is just a copy of what's in x86. We are doing the changes right now.
