I've never actually heard of that before. Up until 5.1, LFS never built `mktemp', and we never had any problems with `patch' reported (at least to my knowledge). It might be worth you posting to lfs-support with the error messages you get.
Chapter 7: "negligable" should be "negligible" "distrubtion" should be "distribution" (p. 343, near the end) "effected" should be "affected" (p. 264, near the top)
