Two moths ago was decided that 6.2 will be released with the most recent 
version available at that time of the 2.6.16 kernel tree.

I don't have time to search the relevant thread in lfs-dev.

Plus, there is an old policy involved: after packages freeze, only updates to 
fix security vulnerability are allowed (I hope that you don't want that an 
stable LFS book will be released with well known vulnerabilities issues), and 
the kernel update fits into that category.
