The obvious culprit to me is the 'startx' script: I don't go that far, although I am now building all the Pre-X things like png and xml2 and even freetype. I first noticed the problem immediately after postfix (script failed on a typo, when I restarted the host-specific processing was broken).
My initial guess was that either postfix or nfs-utils were doing this, but I can't see it in the code.
