I can't explain or reproduce the results you are seeing. Here's a
transcript of my attempts to reproduce it:

$ md5sum glibc-2.12.1-makefile_fix-1.patch
0ef634ac78e582f45d0e7643bfda7505 glibc-2.12.1-makefile_fix-1.patch
$ tar xf glibc-2.12.1.tar.bz2
$ cd glibc-2.12.1/
$ patch -Np1 -i ../glibc-2.12.1-makefile_fix-1.patch
